A Computer Aided Designer or (CAD) uses a computer to design virtual objects and images like two dimensional figures or three dimensional objects. Computer Aided Design can have differing terminology based on the industry, like, Computer Aided Industrial Design, Computer Aided Styling, Computer Aided Manufacturing or Computer Aided Engineering.

The role of a Computer Aided Designer is to create audio and details in construction, manufacturing, structural, mechanical, architectural and other fields using Computer AidedDesigns and Drafting. A Computer Aided Designer creates design plan for machinery and building a wide range of engineering, manufacturing and construction industries. They do work on surface modeling which means they work in two dimensional designs and solid modeling, i.e., three-dimensional designs. Surface modeling draws flat representation of a product. In solid modeling, engineers can take a virtual view of inside of the product, building, structure or machinery.

A Computer Aided Designer is expected to have skills in mathematics, 3D ComputerAided Design, computer based design, mechanical drawing, building prototypes, architectural drawing and manual drafting techniques. Computer Aided Designer is expected to have skills of automated drafting software application like architectural desktop, micro-station or AutoCAD,

The Computer aided designer is required to possess skills to create computerized drawings of steel construction, precast concrete, remodeling projects, electrical systems, orthographic products, automobiles and jewelry etc., through its creativity and practical knowledge.

The question “What does a Computer Aided Designer do?” itself becomes solved when we see multi-dimensional roles of a Computer Aided Designer all around us. Automotive, Construction, Engineering, Architecture, Communication, Utilities, Entertainment and Manufacturing industries usually require Computer Aided Design professionals. CAD is so enormously economic that it is now quite frequently used indiscrete differential geometry, hardware and software computer graphics and computational geometry.

After obtaining a job, you get further training from your company in CAD software according to the specific requirements of the company. For example, if the firm is involved in designing petrochemical facilities, you might get training on Plant Design Systems (PDS). There are numerous work-based qualifications covering Computer Aided Design which you can have, such as NVQ Performing Engineering Operations level 1 & 2, NVQ Engineering Technical Support level 3 and EAL Advanced Diploma in Engineering & Technology level 3. There are BTEC HNC, HND or other foundation degrees in engineering, civil engineering or construction engineering.

There are various types of positions depending upon the nature of job, academic qualification and experience of a CAD Professional. For example, a CAD detailer gets an average annual salary of $30,000. Salary of a CAD Designer on an average comes to about $37,500 and the annual salary of a CAD Analyzer may be around $38,500 in a year.
