Position Summary

DRS PESS Group has an immediate need for a Chief Power Systems Engineer. This senior interdivisional position is a significant technical leadership role that will provide system level technical leadership on a portfolio of challenging power system, motor-drive system and controls integration development programs. Projects will include proposal development, new product development programs and integration programs.

The ideal candidate is an individual well versed in power system and control systems fundamentals, with a basic understanding of motor drives and electromagnetic machines.  The ability to learn new technologies and new applications of technologies is critical.  An understanding of thermodynamic engines is an advantage. 

A basic understanding of program management is necessary.  The ability to work collaboratively with, and variously drive, suppliers, partners and customers is necessary.  The ability to manage risk, and manage tradeoffs between component design features and requirements is critical.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position are technical leadership of power systems and motor drive systems for proposal generation, new product development, and mentoring of program technical staff. The position will be variously assigned to DRS PESS divisions leading both single and multi-divisional programs.  Product areas will include permanent magnet motors and generators, power conversion electronics, turbomachinery, and controls for power generation and land and marine propulsion and power systems.

The successful candidate must be capable of:

Developing and delivering creative cost-effective system-level solutions that meet customer needs

Supporting all phases of new product development from ideation through design, analysis, build, and validation

Contributing directly to project success through individual technical contributions

Providing technical leadership and guidance to DRS, partner, and sub-contractor new product development engineers

Clearly communicating and presenting technical information

Confidently and competently representing DRS in front of our customers

Capable of independent execution

Domestic and international travel is required. 

The position will report to the DRS PESS Group Chief Technology Officer.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Engineering

7 years experience, including product development experience

US citizen

Additional Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge

Familiarity with applicable US DoD Mil Standards

Technical leadership and/or management experience

Program or project management experience

System modeling (Simulink, VHDL AMS, Simplorer or equiv.)

System engineering

Advanced degree
