The Mechanical Designer will work with and assist scientists, faculty and students to develop and/or redesign products. This position is to support a 5-year project and is a full time permanent position with the chance for renewal if the project is renewed. The main purpose is to assist students, researchers, and faculty with designing, developing, or redesigning new/existing products for the machine shop, which supports the principal investigators and labs.
The Design Engineer will be presented with designs via verbal instructions, sketches, prints, or CAD files and will be responsible for the completeness of information on final designs and if necessary, preparing CAD files for conversion to other CAD or CAM systems.
Troubleshoot and problem solve production issues
Coordinate the placement of work within the department, the company’s central machine shop, or outside vendors
Obtain quotes for work to be done
Act as a liaison between customers, the central machine shop, vendors, and the company’s Purchasing and Subcontracts Office
Maintain records
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or closely related field
Minimum 4 years’ programming, editing, and drafting experience; general drafting and fundamental design experience
Ability to accurately draw and dimension detail parts; proficiency with CAD software on a PC
Ability to program CNC machine tools
Proficiency with all common manual and CNC machine tools
4 years’ DelCam multi-axis programming and editing experience
Experience with titanium materials and plastics
Experience operating 5 axis machines
Ability to interpret complex blueprints and geometric and trigonometric principles
Knowledge of HAAS and machining principals
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Must possess working knowledge of Solid Edge, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel
Experience with MRP and BOM structure and costing; and 3D modeling, drafting techniques, engineering terminology, and applicable materials and production processes.
May need to lift weights of up to fifty pounds
