Job Description:

SSAI is seeking a motivated and creative graphic designer and writer to join the GLOBE Observer team. GLOBE Observer is part of the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program, an international science and education program that provides students and the public worldwide with the opportunity to participate in data collection and the scientific process, and contribute meaningfully to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment. GLOBE Observer is an app-based citizen science program that makes it possible for anyone to participate in GLOBE. The position entails creating content for print products, the website and social media. The individual selected for this position will play an active role on the GLOBE Observer communication team. Among other duties, the individual will be responsible for the following:

Creating a visual design for key GLOBE Observer web pages

Maintaining fresh content on the web site, including content produced by other team members as well as content created by the individual

Designing print products for science communication

Creating videos in collaboration with other team members

Supporting outreach events as needed

Required Qualifications:

BS Degree in graphic design or communications or closely related field

2 years of experience in graphic design - particularly science visualization

Advanced knowledge of Adobe Photoshop

Familiarity with basic web development tools (HTML)

Strong written communication skills

Enthusiasm for science and visual communication

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Ability to work under tight deadlines

Proven organizational skills and attention to detail

Desired Qualifications:

GIS or mapping skills to create visualizations based on geographic data (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, etc.)

Experience with scientific programming and data processing (e.g., Python, R, IDL, Matlab) as well as standard formats (HDF, netCDF)

Experience in science communication, preferably relating to NASA Earth science missions
